Pastoral Ministry as Making Disciples and “Who Pastors the Pastors?”
on 17th March 2016

Every week John Wesley expected his Methodist class members to answer the question “How does it go with your soul?”

Class and band meeting were for mutual challenge and encouragement based on the scriptural principles “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:23-25 NIV

As leaders we are looked to by the congregation to care for them, but in reality who cares for us as leaders? If one was to ask that question of someone within a denominational or 'stream' structure there would be any number of theoretical answers but what happens in practice is often very different. The statistics relating to “pastoral drop out” are frightening! So what could be done to create ways to approach the problem differently?

The Message Works Trust and South East Prayer Mission (as a joint project) have invited Dr Phil Meadows of Inspire Movement to facilitate a one day seminar for leaders examining:

  • Who pastors the pastors and what we can do to support each other?
  • How to create an approach to pastoral care for members of the congregation that is “active nurture/ discipleship”?

Phil has extensive experience of helping people, in the UK and USA, examine these questions and develop “fellowship bands” that support a 'rhythm of discipleship' which helps church leaders and members grow through the ups and downs of daily life.
